A new feature has been confirmed to be in the OnePlus 6T once it hits the market later this month.
On Wednesday, OnePlus CEO Pete Lau talked about the tech behind the new in-display fingerprint sensor on the OnePlus 6T that allows users to unlock their phone by tapping on the screen. This feature is called Screen Unlock, and it has a lens that registers your fingerprint as you press down on the glass.
According to Lau, the screen of the OnePlus 6T will be used as a source to enhance the outline of the fingerprint, thus allowing the sensor to read the dimensions and shape. The fingerprint information is then stored on a dedicated “Trust Zone” in the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 so whenever Screen Unlock is used, your fingerprint will be compared to the one stored to ensure authenticity.
“We spent months shaving milliseconds off the unlock time and carefully refining the unlock animation to ensure a satisfying experience. Through the use of several software algorithms, Screen Unlock will learn to recognize your fingerprint with higher accuracy through extended use. In combining the latest hardware with self-learning software algorithms that intelligently preload your fingerprint information, we have created an incredibly fast in-display unlock experience. Screen Unlock marks a momentous leap forward in unlock technology, delivering unmatched speed and convenience,” Lau explained on the OnePlus forum.
Of course, the OnePlus 6T won’t come cheap, with CNET reporting that it will likely be priced at $550. Well, the upcoming smartphone does have a lot of interesting features, so it will be worth it.
Meanwhile, tech enthusiasts will get the chance to be one of the first individuals to own the upcoming smartphone. All you have to do is join the OnePlus 6T edition of “The Lab.” The application will close at 21:00 p.m. HKT on Oct 8.
