One of the biggest concerns regarding “No Man’s Sky” was the hype built around the video game. It just seemed like the title was elevated to such heights that it couldn’t possibly live up to the expectations. However, the reviews are in, and the verdict has been mostly encouraging so far.
Since the game just came out and there are practically countless planets to explore, all reviewers can offer right now are initial impressions of their experience. So far, many are expressing simple awe at the magnitude of the universe that developers at Hello Games managed to create. Philip Kollar over at Polygon wrote about his first impression of the game and how it turned out completely different from the carefree space exploration title he expected.
“In actuality, No Man’s Sky is first and foremost a survival game,” Kollar wrote. “From the confusing outset, where you’re thrown onto a planet with a crashed ship and told only to gather the resources needed to repair the ship, it’s all about hunting down various minerals and isotopes needed to live.”
Ben Gilbert of Business Insider, on the other hand, was thoroughly impressed and excited about the video game. Noting the seemingly inexhaustible number of species, secrets and space exploration, Gilbert’s initial review was positively dripping with child-like giddiness.
Practically every review mentions the cash rewards that players get whenever they take the time to explore every nook and cranny of a very large universe, which they can use to upgrade their ship and suit. The difficulty of doing this thanks to the survival aspect of maintaining essential resources that will keep the character alive was prominent as well. The Day-one patch also came into play for reviewers who got their hands on early copies of the game due to the massive changes that it made.
