New Journal Square Tower in Jersey City, NJ Built by 500+ Union Carpenters

JERSEY CITY, N.J., Nov. 30, 2017 -- The first structure of the new Journal Square Towers has been built on Pavonia Avenue in Jersey City due to the skilled work of more than 500 Union Carpenters from the Northeastern Regional Council of Carpenters (NRCC). The first $204 million tower was completed in July 2017 after nearly two years of labor from Union workers.

After long awaited zoning changes approved by the City Council in October, Kushner Companies acquired the land and began developing the area. AJD Construction Co. was the general contractor for the project and Industrial Urban provided the foundational and structural work.

“Developments such as the Journal Square project are critical not only for the future of Jersey City, but for members of the NRCC as well,” said Bill Sproule, NRCC President & New Jersey Regional Manager. “These projects provide well-paying construction jobs and benefits to carpenters and other tradespeople, which positively impacts the local economies in the long-term.”

Plans are in place for the construction of six additional residential towers in the vicinity, including two-tower developments south of the PATH hub and another on the site of the old Jersey Journal building. Construction on the second tower, which will cost an estimated $250 million, is expected to begin at the start of 2018.

“This job is not only important for the NRCC carpenters, but for Union workers as a whole as well,” said Patrick Kelleher, President of Hudson County Building Trades. “These projects will greatly improve the community and will continue to be developed in the coming years.”

The finished residential tower, located above the PATH trainline is 54 floors and houses 538 apartments. It also contains a sky lounge, outdoor pool, gym, library, screening room and extra rooms for children. The next two buildings will both reach an upwards of 70 stories and 700 units with views of the Manhattan Skyline.

Twenty percent of the units will consist of affordable housing. The project is funded by various sources, including Economic Development Administration (EDA) grants and tax abatements. These abatements mandate that a portion of the carpentry work is filled by both minority and female apprentices.
