Mister Donut has introduced a fresh autumn lineup featuring five new donuts inspired by sweet potato and chestnut flavors. This marks a significant shift from previous offerings, with no direct returns from past autumn collections, sparking curiosity about the revamped treats.
Mister Donut’s Bold New Autumn Flavors Offer a Fresh Twist on Seasonal Favorites
They indulged in all five of Mister Donut’s new autumn offerings to see how they compare to those of previous years.
Despite the lingering summer heat in Japan, food makers have already shifted focus to autumn-themed selections, including the highly anticipated release of this year’s Mister Donut autumn donuts.
Upon learning that the popular donut chain would be revamping its offerings from last year, they delved into the past to see how Mister Donut’s autumn-themed lineup has evolved. While this marks the sixth consecutive year the chain has sold sweet potato-flavored donuts, none of the donuts from previous years made a direct return. Even the Daigaku-imo and Sweet Potato donuts, introduced in 2019, were absent this year, raising the question: would the new lineup compensate for the loss of the classics?
Determined to find out, they headed to a local Mister Donut branch on August 28, when the new autumn flavors launched.
Sweet Potato and Chestnut Donuts Take Center Stage in Mister Donut's New Autumn Lineup
They started with the sweet potato offerings, beginning with the Fragrant Brulée donut. Although brulée donuts were introduced in 2022, this year’s version featured a different ratio of Beni Haruka and Anno-imo sweet potatoes and a dense dough. The caramelized exterior and the moist sweet potato filling left an impression of a sweet potato-flavored brulée, per SoraNews24.
Next was the Sticky Sweet Potato Honey donut, which replaced syrup in the dough with a thick mitsu-imo glaze. They found a more excellent contrast in taste between this year’s version and past iterations than in the brulée-style lineup.
The Salty Butter Cream donut, the final sweet potato-themed treat, was reminiscent of past Sweet Potato donuts but now with a layer of salted buttercream and strips of fried sweetened sweet potatoes, a nod to the Imo-keep donut from 2020.
Then came the two new chestnut-flavored offerings. Shaped like chestnuts, these donuts were topped with chocolate and chestnut flakes. The Angel & Japanese Chestnut Paste donut hid a dollop of chestnut flavor beneath whipped cream. In contrast, the Japanese Chestnut Whipped Cream donut had cream infused with chestnut flavor, making it the most consistently chestnut-like.
Though it was challenging to pick a favorite, each donut had its unique appeal, with the chestnut-flavored offerings adding novelty to the lineup. They concluded that none of the new donuts were a miss, and options like Starbucks' autumn drinks are also available for those craving more seasonal fare.
