Microsoft confirmed on Friday that it has fully restored access to its Microsoft 365 productivity suite following a widespread service outage that disrupted users across multiple regions, particularly in North America. The disruption affected several core Microsoft 365 services, including Outlook, Microsoft Defender, and Microsoft Purview, causing significant inconvenience for businesses and individual users who rely on these platforms for daily operations.
According to data from outage monitoring website Downdetector.com, reports of Microsoft 365 issues dropped sharply after the restoration. As of 1:05 a.m. ET, there were approximately 113 reported incidents, a dramatic decline from more than 15,890 reports recorded at the peak of the outage the previous day. The steep reduction in outage reports suggests that Microsoft’s recovery efforts were largely successful and that services have stabilized.
Microsoft 365 provided updates through its official status page on X, stating that the affected infrastructure had been restored to a healthy state and that the service impact had been resolved. The company emphasized that users should now experience normal functionality across all previously affected services. Earlier communications from Microsoft explained that the outage was linked to a portion of its North America infrastructure that was not processing network traffic as expected.
To mitigate the issue and accelerate recovery, Microsoft rerouted traffic to alternate infrastructure while engineers worked to identify and address the root cause. The company also confirmed that it was actively investigating the incident to prevent similar disruptions in the future. While Microsoft did not disclose the exact technical cause, it acknowledged that multiple services were impacted simultaneously, highlighting the scale of the disruption.
This Microsoft 365 outage underscores the importance of resilient cloud infrastructure, especially as organizations increasingly depend on cloud-based productivity software. With services now restored and outage reports declining, Microsoft users can resume normal operations, though the incident is likely to raise ongoing discussions around reliability, redundancy, and transparency in major cloud service providers.
