Formula One Group CEO Chase Carey believes that Michael Schumacher’s son, Mick Schumacher, entering the F1 race will be a “great story” in the future. Meanwhile, the F1 boss also said that the retired racing driver still has a role in the industry.

A few weeks ago, Mick Schumacher claimed a win that has meaningful ties with his father’s own career. The younger Schumacher bagged his first F3 victory at the Spa-Francorchamps in late July. It was the same circuit where Michael Schumacher got his maiden F1 win 26 years ago.

Mick is showing that he has the right tools to build his own legacy aside from having a legendary surname in the field of auto racing. With that, Carey is one of the many people hoping that Mick will eventually follow in his father’s footsteps by entering the F1.

“It would be a great story, of course,” Carey said in an interview with the German newspaper Bild am Sonntag (via AutoWeek). “It would touch the hearts of many fans in a very unique way.”

Carey added that years after Michael Schumacher’s tragic accident in late 2013, he still has a “unique role” for the F1 racing just by being a highly noted world champion. “He is and will remain an icon of our sport,” Carey said.

On the other hand, Carey also confirmed that they are looking to ease the process for up-and-coming drivers entering F1 from lower-class racing leagues. The F1 boss added, “But regardless of that, we want to try to make it easier for good young drivers to make the transition. And Mick in Formula 1 would be special, of course.”

Michael Schumacher encountered a skiing accident in December 2013 that caused him severe head injuries. The F1 legend was put in a medically induced coma while his family immediately requested fans and the press for privacy ever since. However, in October 2014, F1 commentator Jean-Louis Moncet confirmed that the retired racing driver was “waking up very slowly” after being in a coma for almost a year.
