Mattel Inc announced it was recalling some of its Fisher-Price baby rockers variants while warning that the product not to be used due to risk of suffocation following reports of deaths of four infants aged 11 weeks to 2 months.
The deaths occurred between April 2019 and February, according to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
The infants were reportedly placed on their backs unrestrained in the soothers and later found on their stomachs.
The toymaker noted that the toys being recalled were the 4-in-1 Rock 'n Glide Soothers and the 2-in-1 Soothe 'n Play Gliders. It claimed that there were no reported fatalities related to the glider.
However, CPSC's Acting Chairman Robert Adler pointed out that it is not only the soothers that are unsafe for infant sleep due to the risk of suffocation but also other inclined products, including gliders, rockers, and swings.
Mattel said that around 120,000 "Rock 'n Glide Soothers" were sold between January 2014 to December 2020 at retail stores, such as Walmart, Target, and Amazon. The toymaker added that about 55,000 2-in-1 Soothe 'n Play Gliders were sold from November 2018 to May 2021.
Fisher-Price will provide a refund for the returned items.
