US President Joe Biden received praise from many political figures and pundits for his approach towards the Russian invasion of Ukraine. MSNBC host Joe Scarborough also praised Biden this week for being able to unite the NATO member countries in standing up to Russia.
Scarborough praised Biden for being able to unite all the countries under NATO and beyond in standing up against Russia as Vladimir Putin wages war on Ukraine. Scarborough cited that Biden was able to rebuild the NATO alliance that his immediate predecessor Donald Trump often sought to undermine.
Scarborough noted that he was critical of the US leader for the withdrawal from Afghanistan and that some troops should have remained to maintain peace and security in the country. However, the “Morning Joe” host said that Biden has done what those in his position are needed to do in rebuilding the NATO alliance through diplomacy and bringing the alliance “to a better place” compared to the previous administrations.
“But as far as this crisis goes, from the very beginning, Joe Biden has done what we need American presidents to do,” said Scarborough. “That is quietly, diplomatically stitching NATO back together after it was being ripped apart by Donald Trump for four years and bringing NATO actually into a better place than it has been in, again, decades.”
In other related news, Biden is also set to host the leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations at the White House for a special summit this month, the White House announced Monday. The meeting will take place from March 28 to 29, with Washington seeing the upcoming event as an opportunity to demonstrate the US commitment to the region with a chance to mark 45 years of relations between the US and ASEAN.
“It is a top priority for the Biden-Harris administration to serve as a strong, reliable partner and to strengthen an empowered and unified ASEAN to address the challenges of our time,” said White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki in a statement.
ASEAN has barred Myanmar’s military junta leadership from the previous annual summit back in October and restricted the country’s participation to non-political representatives. The policy is expected to stay in place in the upcoming summit, according to a Biden administration official.
