Many current and former occupants of government offices have reacted to the passing of former vice president Walter Mondale. President Joe Biden was among those who paid tribute to the late vice president in a statement.

The White House released a website with the Bidens’ statement on Mondale’s passing. Mondale, who served as Jimmy Carter’s vice president and was once the Democratic presidential nominee, passed away at 93 years old this week. Biden extended his condolences to Mondale’s family and loved ones and shared his fondest memories with the late vice president.

Biden also shared how Mondale was the first person he called when he was first approached by Barack Obama to become his vice president. Biden was able to speak with Mondale a few days before his passing. During Mondale’s presidential campaign, he also made history by choosing Geraldine Ferraro to be his running mate, the first woman to be on a major party ticket.

“When President Obama asked me to consider being his Vice President, Fritz was my first call and trusted guide. He not only took my call, he wrote me a memo. It was Walter Mondale who defined the Vice Presidency as a full partnership, and helped provide a model for my service,” said Biden in the statement. “And Joan did the same for Jill, helping her carve out a role for herself as our nation’s Second Lady.”

Mondale also spoke with Vice President Kamala Harris prior to his passing. Biden said that Harris’ election victory was something he knew Mondale was pleased to see.

Upon his death on Monday, Mondale had sent an email to his staff, thanking them for their work. Mondale’s farewell letter shared how thankful he was to have them by his side, saying that they have all accomplished a lot over the years. Mondale also wished them well “and keep up the good fight,” adding that “Joe in the White House certainly helps.”

Prior to his death, Mondale was the oldest living vice president alongside Carter, who is also the oldest living president. In the last days of his life, Mondale received calls from his supporters and fellow leaders.
