Japan’s three largest banking institutions are expected to receive access to Claude Mythos, the advanced artificial intelligence model created by U.S.-based AI startup Anthropic, according to a report published by Nikkei on Wednesday. The move highlights Japan’s growing focus on AI cybersecurity and digital infrastructure protection as concerns over advanced AI systems continue to rise worldwide.
The report stated that MUFG Bank, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corp, and Mizuho Bank could gain access to the powerful AI model as early as the end of May. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent reportedly informed Japanese officials and banking representatives about the development during meetings held in Japan earlier this week.
Claude Mythos is considered one of the most advanced AI cybersecurity models currently available. The system is reportedly capable of detecting and exploiting software vulnerabilities at a significantly faster rate than earlier AI technologies. Due to its highly sophisticated capabilities, access to the model has been tightly restricted, with only around 50 organizations worldwide reportedly authorized to use it. Those organizations include major U.S. corporations, American financial institutions, and several British government agencies.
Japan has been actively seeking access to the AI model as part of broader efforts to strengthen national cybersecurity defenses. The country has increasingly emphasized the importance of protecting critical infrastructure from emerging cyber threats linked to rapidly evolving artificial intelligence technologies.
According to the Nikkei report, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi instructed cabinet ministers to intensify efforts aimed at identifying vulnerabilities within Japan’s infrastructure while also reducing security risks associated with advanced AI systems. Discussions surrounding Claude Mythos were also reportedly included during Takaichi’s meeting with Bessent on Tuesday.
The potential introduction of Anthropic’s AI technology into Japan’s banking sector marks a significant step in international AI cooperation and cybersecurity advancement.
