Columbus, Ohio, Nov. 07, 2017 -- Cancer informatics and digital pathology workflow solution provider Inspirata®, Inc. announced today that it has deployed the first group of its digital pathology cockpits for 13 early adopter pathologists. This new digital technology is designed to help improve the cancer diagnostic workflow at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC – James) located in Columbus, Ohio.

The initiative, which began in July 2016, is part of a 10-year, managed service that Inspirata is providing to deploy an end-to-end digital pathology workflow solution that is expected to eventually be used for primary diagnosis of cancer cases. The cockpit deployment portion of the project will be complete in early 2018 when each of the more than 50 pathologists at the OSUCCC – James will have cockpits installed for their use.
“Having our pathologists use the cockpit gets us another step closer to being the first pathology department in the country to move to a complete digital workflow,” says Anil Parwani, MD, PhD, director of digital pathology at the OSUCCC – James. “Digital pathology offers tremendous promise to advance the practice of pathology and, ultimately, improve patient outcomes.” Dr. Parwani, who leads this project for the OSUCCC – James, also serves as vice chair and director of anatomic pathology at The Ohio State University College of Medicine Department of Pathology.
In March 2017, Inspirata announced that the first phase of the project was complete when the new digital pathology scanning center opened at the OSUCCC – James. It is the largest, single-site deployment of whole slide image scanners. The cockpit deployment portion of the engagement, which is another major milestone, is scheduled to be complete in early 2018. At that time, each of the more than 50 pathologists at The James will have a two- or three-monitor cockpit in their office.
“We are working with the OSUCCC – James to convert millions of retrospective and prospective glass histopathology slides into high-resolution whole slide images that their pathologists, in turn, can view, manipulate, annotate and share using our digital pathology cockpit,” says Inspirata’s Senior Vice President of Digital Pathology, Sunil Singhal.
As part of the project, Inspirata has provided the scanning devices needed to convert the glass slides into digital whole slide images, integration services to enable pathologists to access patient information and clinical history from other health information systems, and the cockpit itself. Inspirata also is providing ongoing program planning, project management and implementation support to migrate the OSUCCC – James to a digital pathology workflow. This includes staffing and operational management for the project.
