The iGaming industry can be thought of as a behemoth, and one only must look at the size of the industry to see this. Every year, the size of the industry increases due to emerging markets growing, as well as the fact that more people than ever are now accessing online casinos; here's a state-by-state breakdown of the best places to play online. Over the world, there are emerging iGaming markets that are ripe with opportunity, and these places are always extremely appealing to iGaming operators and affiliates looking to get involved in that growing market. The US is one region where iGaming is also emerging, and experts even seem to think it could eventually be the most profitable iGaming market in the world.
Those involved in iGaming will know that the US is a complex beast to tackle. This is because each state can oversee gambling laws, and this has meant that certain gambling activities are available in one state, but not neighbouring ones. There will likely be many who believe that laws in the US should be decided and applied centrally, rather than on a state-by-state basis. While this would certainly make it easier for iGaming players, because of the wide differences that vary dependent on the state, it can also be said that the current model is much more flexible.
Despite having a history steeped in gambling, up until recently, the US has been relatively strict with its gambling laws. As most will know though, this all changed in 2018 when the Supreme Court legalised sports betting. While this decision did not mean the activity was immediately legitimised across the country, it did mean that states could now decide for themselves if they wanted to legalise sports betting or not. To get an idea of the US iGaming industry, it could prove useful to break down the different types of gambling activities that are available to US players.
Where is gambling partly legal?
In states like North Dakota, Michigan and California, players have limited access to casinos that are owned by tribes, such as the Seminole Tribe in California. These allow residents access to gambling and provide a source of income for tribal communities two, so it is easy to see how this setup is doubly beneficial.
Where is gambling illegal?
Utah and Hawaii are some of the most conservative states around when it comes to gambling, and in these regions, all forms of gambling are outlawed. Although Utah has been known to ignore casual betting, most gamblers would rather visit neighbouring Nevada, where casino gambling is fully legal.
Where is gambling mostly legal?
As already aforementioned, casino gambling is fully legal in Nevada, but the gambling activities do not stop there. There is no doubt that Nevada is the most liberal state in the US regarding gambling ever since 1931, and players who travel here will find that they have access to sports betting and live poker too. Interestingly, Nevada does not have a state lottery.
Given the size of the US and its status as a world superpower, it is clear that the US iGaming industry is only in its infancy right now. However, the ball is rolling and the industry can only grow from this point as more states legalise gambling activities.
