A U.S. unit of Japanese automaker Honda Motor Co. made a groundbreaking announcement on Thursday. They revealed their plan to introduce the Honda Prologue, their first mass-produced electric vehicle (EV) model, in North America at the beginning of 2024.
This highly-anticipated SUV will be jointly developed with U.S. automaker General Motors Co. and manufactured at a General Motors plant. With this release, Honda aims to make a significant impact in the ever-evolving EV market, according to Japan News.
Honda Motor recently forged a joint venture with Ford Motor and BMW to pioneer electric vehicle grid services in North America.
The Prologue will mark a milestone for the Japanese carmaker as it is expected to be the first vehicle of its kind by a Japanese manufacturer eligible for federal tax credits. These credits, offered to EV buyers, will be an added incentive for potential customers.
Equipped with Ultium lithium-ion batteries, developed by General Motors, the Prologue boasts a formidable driving range of approximately 480 kilometers. Honda PR representative Chris Martin told The Verge that the credits work specifically with EVgo and its roaming partners, including ChargePoint.
Japanese Automaker's EV Revolution Gains Momentum
Honda's venture into the EV market is no surprise, considering that other Japanese automakers also pay attention to this burgeoning sector. Notably, Toyota Motor Corp. plans to commence EV manufacturing in the United States by 2025.
Additionally, recent research conducted by S&P Global Mobility indicates that around 50% of vehicles made in North America by 2030 will be electric.
The upcoming 2024 Honda Prologue is poised to make waves with its impressive EPA-estimated range of 300 miles on a single charge. This milestone is made possible by including an 85kWh battery, similar in size to the Chevy Blazer EV. The Prologue shares many similarities with its counterpart, including the 121.8-inch wheelbase and an 11-inch driver instrument display.
Cutting-Edge Technology Meets Connectivity
Honda's Prologue and the Blazer feature Google built-in software, but Honda raises the bar by including wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto support. This seamless integration of technology elevates both the driving experience and user connectivity.
The Prologue also offers several charging package options, including public charging credits, providing convenience and peace of mind to its buyers.
