Google begins implementing revenue-boosting service terms

Google is expected to demand a 30 percent cut on Google Play purchases and mandating the use of its payment system by October.

Google is expected to boost its revenue through YouTube monthly fees, account storage purchases, and Google Play commissions following the start of the wide range of changes to its service terms.

Previously small YouTube content creators who don’t qualify for partner programs couldn’t put ads, but now that all creators may carry ads on videos, YouTube Premium membership is expected to increase as it would give ad-free access to content across for a monthly fee.

Google Photos service had also limited users' free storage at 15 GB that comes with every Google account, and those who need more storage would need to purchase them.

For June, Google will provide a 15 percent discount on the commission it charges on Google Play purchases to app developers whose annual sales from the company’s app market service are less than $1 million and who support the company's payment system.

The latest discount applies to all nongame purchases, including in-app transactions.

Google is expected to demand a 30 percent cut on Google Play purchases and mandating the use of its payment system by October.

Google’s new in-app purchase policy has been criticized by local app developers who would have to forgo a huge part of their earnings, given the market clout foreign platform operators have in Korea.

According to the Ministry of Science and ICT, the increase in commission would hike Google’s revenue from the in-app purchases on its app market service by 156.8 billion won.
