One of the most disturbing experiences a person can arguably have is receiving a message that they sent to themselves. More often than not, such occurrences happen by accident, but a recent rash of illicit internet activities are involving Gmail users apparently sending spam to others and to themselves. This certainly doesn’t make for a normal day.
Gmail users basically woke up on Sunday to find that their Inboxes have been filled with Spam that was apparently sent by them to their email address, Mashable reports. What’s more, upon checking their Sent folders, it would appear that Spam was indeed sent from their accounts.
The really disturbing part of this development is how these users actually had their two-faction authentication activated. Hardly any Gmail account holder hasn’t done this already, after all.
Yet, even with the added security protocol that was supposed to protect users against exactly this kind of situation, Spam still got through Google’s security. This is strange in and of itself because the company usually has an incredible level of security.
In a statement that the company sent to 9To5Google, Google noted that they are already aware of the issue. It was also quick to point out that this was only happening to a small number of people.
“We are aware of a spam campaign impacting a small subset of Gmail users and have actively taken measures to protect against it. This attempt involved forged email headers that made it appear as if users were receiving emails from themselves, which also led to those messages erroneously appearing in the Sent folder. We have identified and are reclassifying all offending emails as spam, and have no reason to believe any accounts were compromised as part of this incident. If you happen to notice a suspicious email, we encourage you to report it as spam. More information on how to report spam can be found by visiting our Help Center,” the statement reads.
