Global Port Organizations to Host World Trade Week Event on May 15

LONG BEACH, Calif., May 08, 2018 -- Continuing a tradition first started in Southern California in 1972, the Los Angeles Customs Brokers and Freight Forwarders Association and the Foreign Trade Association will host a program featuring Michael Dougherty, Assistant Secretary, Border, Immigration and Trade Policy, U.S. Department of Homeland Security. This event celebrates the enduring ways in which global trade contributes to the nation’s economy and expands opportunities for businesses worldwide.

The May 15 event begins with an 8:30 am workshop at the Grand Events Center in Long Beach. In addition to Mr. Dougherty, the event includes speakers from the three other federal agencies: the Consumer Products Safety Commission, the Food & Drug Administration, and the Department of Agriculture. Speakers will provide updates on trade programs, targeting and enforcement efforts, and similar programs. Attendees can expect to hear about new hot topics on trade and compliance, while enjoying opportunities to network with others interested in global trade.

World Trade week actively promotes the positive aspects of international trade.  The tradition started in 1926 and by 1935 President Franklin Roosevelt officially proclaimed WTW a National observance by the U.S. Government.

World Trade Week began conceptually in 1926. Locally, it initially focused on promoting the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, After World War II, the focus expanded to include all organizations in Southern California involved in world trade.
