The Russian ambassador to Turkey, Andrey G. Karlov was shot dead on Monday at an art exhibition in Ankara by a lone Turkish gunman, who was heard shouting “Allah Hu Akbar” (God is great) and “Don’t forget Aleppo, don’t forget Syria!”. The assassin was shot dead by Turkish police officers and was found that he himself was an off-duty police officer in the capital.
The Russia-Turkey relationship declined to the worst last year, when Ankara shot down a Russian jet in Syria, angering Russian president Vladimir Putin. In exchange, Russia took several retaliatory measures, such as tourism ban to Turkey, which hit the Turkish Economy hard. However, this year, the tensions started to thaw after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan apologized to Vladimir Putin over the incident. Now, this embarrassing security failure might escalate the tensions, as it is a major blow for the Russian government, who certainly would be criticized over its involvement in the Syrian conflict, which is now in its sixth year.
The attack was a rare instance of an assassination of a Russian envoy. It might have been the first since Pyotr Voykov, a Soviet ambassador to Poland, was shot to death in Warsaw in 1927.
After the attack, Turkish President Mr. Erdogan issued a statement saying, “I believe this is an attack on Turkey, the Turkish state and the Turkish people, and also a clear provocation to Turkish-Russian relations. I am sure our Russian friends also see this fact”. Fortunately, Mr. Putin agreed with Mr. Erdogan and issued a statement saying, “This murder is clearly a provocation aimed at undermining the improvement and normalization of Russian-Turkish relations, as well as undermining the peace process in Syria promoted by Russia, Turkey, Iran and other countries interested in settling the conflict in Syria”
