In a move that signals a brighter future in the industry of renewable energy, the huge commercial wind farm called Block Island Wind Project finally went live. It’s the first ever offshore farm that utilizes wind energy in American history, paving the way for a greener future.
The Bock Island Wind Project was developed by Deepwater Wind, Futurism reports, and is located close to the shores of Rhode Island. The installation has five wind turbines working simultaneously and is capable of producing 30 megawatts of energy.
Bringing all of that energy to the mainland are submarine cables, transporting all of the power produced by the farm to the main grid. This will then be distributed to households and buildings that are tapping into the grid.
This isn’t the only wind farm that Deepwater Wind wants to build, either. As stated on their website, the company wants to build more places like Block Island Wind Project in order to serve more places along the East Coast, and that’s just for starters.
“Headquartered in Providence, RI, we are actively planning offshore wind projects to serve multiple East Coast markets located 15 or more miles offshore, including New York, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and New Jersey,” the website’s About page reads.
This is good news and thanks to calculations conducted by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory via the Peregrine supercomputer, it’s quite possible for the U.S. to get one-third of its energy needs from renewable sources. This is based on the current trajectory of renewable energy trends, with so many groups joining in by creating their own green energy farms and refining renewable technology in general.
On that note, with the current administration expected to have a combative attitude towards renewable energy, there is a risk that the green energy industry could be challenged by the fossil fuel corporations once again. President-elect Donald Trump is already expected to unravel the Paris Agreement, which he has expressed serious doubts about in the past.
