Senator Elizabeth Warren took the stage at the Democratic National Convention with a fiery address in support of Vice President Kamala Harris, but she didn’t miss the opportunity to poke fun at J.D. Vance, the Republican vice presidential nominee, over his recent "couch controversy."
Warren, who finished third in the 2020 Democratic primaries, was met with enthusiastic applause as she approached the podium. The Massachusetts senator, known for her sharp rhetoric and policy-driven speeches, shifted gears during her address to target Vance, who has recently been embroiled in a bizarre and unfounded rumor.
As Warren delivered her remarks, she alluded to the viral joke surrounding Vance, who was recently selected as former President Donald Trump’s running mate. The joke, which spread widely online, falsely claimed that Vance was involved in inappropriate behavior with a couch—an allegation that has been thoroughly debunked.
In her speech, Warren remarked, "Trust Donald Trump and J.D. Vance to look out for your family? Shoot, I wouldn't trust them to move my couch," drawing laughter and cheers from the audience.
This quip comes after the rumors about Vance, stemming from his memoir "Hillbilly Elegy," suggested a connection to improper conduct with a couch. However, the Associated Press conducted a fact-check that dispelled the claims, finding no evidence linking Vance to such behavior. Despite the clarification, the meme continued to circulate, capturing the public’s imagination. The Associated Press later retracted their fact-check due to errors in the editing process.
Warren's jab at Vance was one of several pointed remarks made by Democratic leaders at the convention, targeting the Republican ticket. Her speech, however, also focused on the larger stakes of the upcoming election. She emphasized the need for strong leadership in Washington and highlighted the policies championed by Harris, particularly those addressing economic inequality, healthcare, and reproductive rights.
"We need Kamala Harris. This election is about your family and your future," Warren said, underscoring Harris’s commitment to lowering the cost of living for American families and protecting their rights.
The Democratic National Convention has seen a series of high-profile speakers, all taking aim at Trump and his running mate. Former President Barack Obama, in his address, subtly mocked Trump’s obsession with crowd sizes, making a gesture that many interpreted as a dig at the former president’s ego. Meanwhile, former President Bill Clinton also criticized Trump’s focus on crowd size, questioning whether voters want to spend another four years fixated on such trivial matters.
Warren’s speech not only solidified her support for Harris but also demonstrated the Democratic Party’s willingness to confront the Republican ticket head-on.
