Devastating heat waves, wildfires, hurricanes, and air pollution are the results of elevated carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere. In a recent report, it would seem that current levels are higher than they have been in three million years. As a result, future natural disasters are expected to increase exponentially, which will lead to more deaths, damages, and costs.
Despite the efforts of numerous developed countries to reduce their carbon footprint, the UN released a report indicating that current efforts are simply not good enough. Last year, the Earth still saw a surge in carbon levels. According to WMO Secretary-General Petteri Taalas, this could result in future generations living on an inhospitable planet.
“Without rapid cuts in CO2 and other greenhouse gas emissions, we will be heading for dangerous temperature increases by the end of this century, well above the target set by the Paris climate change agreement,” Taalas said. “Future generations will inherit a much more inhospitable planet. CO2 remains in the atmosphere for hundreds of years and in the oceans for even longer. The laws of physics mean that we face a much hotter, more extreme climate in the future. There is currently no magic wand to remove this CO2 from the atmosphere."
The whole point of the Paris Climate agreement was to make sure that carbon emissions are reduced to a point where the planet’s temperature does not cross over the point of no return, Futurism notes. Unfortunately, it looks like this is simply inevitable, especially with the U.S. government deciding to break away from the accord.
The Earth is heading towards a disaster and humanity is going along for the ride that it had caused. More frequent super storms are just the tip of the iceberg. More floods, entire coastal cities disappearing, and unprecedented temperature increases will be the norm.
