Former President Donald Trump once again demonstrated his penchant for controversy by making light of GOP gubernatorial candidate Mark Robinson’s weight. The remarks, which were delivered before a packed crowd of supporters, quickly became a focal point of the event, overshadowing the intended political agenda and drawing widespread criticism.
Trump, known for his unscripted and often provocative comments, took the stage to express gratitude to his supporters, singling out Robinson among others. However, what began as a routine acknowledgment soon veered into more contentious territory. Trump joked about the stability of the stage, questioning whether it could hold Robinson and others based on their weight. The former president’s quip, “Will this stage hold them?” was met with laughter from the audience, but it also raised eyebrows given the sensitive nature of the comment.
As Trump continued, he invited local sheriffs to join him on stage but not before making another joke about their weight. The offhand remark, suggesting that those over 200 pounds should reconsider stepping up, was quickly followed by an assurance that he was “only kidding.” Yet, the comment added fuel to an already contentious moment, with Trump continuing to reference the weight and safety concerns as the sheriffs joined him on the platform.
The rally, intended to bolster support for Robinson ahead of the GOP primary, instead highlighted the former president’s controversial approach to political discourse. Robinson, who has been endorsed by Trump, is no stranger to controversy himself. His candidacy has attracted significant media attention, particularly due to his history of making polarizing and inflammatory statements.
Robinson, currently serving as North Carolina’s lieutenant governor, gained national attention after a speech last month in which he called for extrajudicial actions, saying, “Some folks need killing!” His comments, delivered during a speech in White Lake, North Carolina, sparked outrage and further polarized voters.
Robinson’s past is littered with incendiary remarks. He has referred to members of the LGBTQ+ community as “maggots,” questioned the gender identity of Michelle Obama, and even denied the Holocaust, labeling the murder of six million Jews as “hogwash.” Additionally, his association with an alleged cult leader and endorsement of antisemitic conspiracy theories have only added to the controversy surrounding his candidacy.
As the general election looms, Robinson is set to face off against Democrat Josh Stein, North Carolina’s state attorney general, in a race to succeed outgoing Governor Roy Cooper. The race is expected to be fiercely contested, with both candidates bringing deeply contrasting visions for the future of the state.
Trump’s rally, intended to boost Robinson’s chances, may have inadvertently drawn more attention to the candidate’s contentious past and the former president’s polarizing campaign tactics. As North Carolina voters prepare to head to the polls, the weight of these controversies—both literal and figurative—may play a significant role in shaping the outcome of this critical election.
