“Destiny” has had a rocky relationship with its fan base, going from ecstatic to downright nasty since it was launched two years ago. The last expansion that the fans were given was “The Taken King,” and that was a good example of “Bungie” doing things right. Since then, updates made fans upset or accepting depending on what kind. With the “Rise of Iron” expansion, the fourth and likely the last for the game, the company is hoping to go out with a bang.
RollingStone covered the issue, noting the tumultuous relationship that fans had with “Destiny.” The article highlights the tendency of fans to go both extremes when it comes to their opinion on the game, with one side saying that it’s the best thing ever and the other saying the opposite.
With the “Twitch” stream of the “Rise of Iron” debut, it seems the company has succeeded in reigniting the fervor that fans once had for the game. Of course, since the expansion itself isn’t even out yet, there’s still the question of whether or not it will be good, and this is putting a lot of pressure on “Bungie.”
The article also featured interviews from the brains behind the game, with senior producer Scott Taylor describing their decision to set the latest expansion on earth.
“We've added some new spaces here and there in previous releases, but this is a whole new zone where players can find new secrets, and battle new enemies,” he said. “We have never done that before. We're learning more about Earth and what's happened since the game started. A key thing here is that time has passed for the Guardians since the original Destiny.”
The Guardian also spoke with the game’s creative director, Christopher Barrett who said that when it comes to the lore surrounding the “Lords of Iron,” it’s time to go in deeper. According to him, since players were already invested in the aspect of the “Iron Banner” and “Saladin,” it was a great opportunity to expand on the story.
