Daewoo Shipbuilding bags 1.1 trillion won oil tanker deals

Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) was awarded orders worth 1.95 trillion won to build 10 very large crude carriers (VLCC), to be delivered to buyers in Asia, Europe, and the Americas by the second half of 2023.

The new project will require DSME's latest technology as the dual-fueled VLCCs will be equipped with ME-GI engines and fuel tanks made with high-manganese steel.

DSME’s smart ship solution, dubbed as DS4, helps ships operate effectively and safely with the company’s natural gas propulsion system.

It helps meet the International Maritime Organization’s requirements on Energy Efficiency Design Index.

The deal, according to a company official, proves DSME’s technological capability of creating LNG-fueled vessels.

The VLCC, which uses both diesel and natural gas, is among DSME’s growing portfolio of LNG-fueled vessels, ranging from container ships to liquefied petroleum gas tankers and shuttle tankers.

With the latest orders, DSME surpassed 20 percent of its annual order target.
