NEW YORK, Feb. 22, 2017 -- Did you know that 85% of dogs suffer from periodontal disease by the time they are three years of age? Untreated dental disease can lead to serious complications, such as tooth loss, infection and even heart, liver and kidney disease. February is Pet Dental Health Month, and to help spread the word, Dr. Dan Carmichael, a NYC board-certified veterinary dentist, has teamed with YourUpdateTV and D S Simon Media in an effort to promote and convey the importance of periodic dental check-ups for your pets.

Dr. Carmichael has seen first-hand the effect a dental cleaning can have on a pet. Recently, a New York City woman took her beloved cat, Peanut, to the Animal Medical Center. According to the owner, Peanut had been feeling unwell for weeks, unable to eat or comfortably sleep. Dr. Carmichael diagnosed and treated the cat for periodontal disease and within days, the cat was feeling better, acting normally, and resuming its usual daily activities. The difference in Peanut’s demeanor was noticeable, with the owner claiming that Dr. Carmichael “changed his life.” So impressed with Dr. Carmichael’s work, she funded this educational campaign during February’s Pet Dental Health Month to help others.
When it comes to periodontal disease, control and prevention is key. Dr. Carmichael recommends that pet owners brush their pet’s teeth at least once a day using a soft-bristled toothbrush. As important, all pets should have an annual checkup and, if possible, get a professional dental cleaning to remain in optimal health.
If your pet has bad or increasingly worsening breath, this could be an early symptom of periodontal disease and a visit to the vet is in order because the consequences of leaving dental disease untreated can lead to tooth loss, infection of major body organs and a diminished quality of life.
