“Call of Duty: Black Ops 4” appears to be selling quite well based on the data that analysts have been able to gather, so far, and this is despite all the complaints about the lack of a single-player campaign. It would seem that there are still many fans who would reflexively buy a game just because of the “Call of Duty” tag. Then again, it could also be because it’s a genuinely good game.
The conclusion came via the NPD Group, which concluded that “Call of Duty: Black Ops 4” is still dominating the charts. While there was and continues to be a lot of complaints regarding the omission of the single-player aspect, they did not seem to have any impact, whatsoever. A Tweet from someone who works with the analytics group confirmed as much.
“The lack of a SP campaign did not hurt Black Ops IIII launch month sales in the slightest,” the Tweet reads.
So, quick hit takes from the October 2018 U.S. Video Game data from The NPD Group:
— Mat Piscatella (@MatPiscatella) November 20, 2018
- The lack of a SP campaign did not hurt Black Ops IIII launch month sales in the slightest
- On the full game Video Game side, year to date, both Physical and Digital game sales are up YoY (cont.)
Clearly, there are enough fans of the franchise to simply buy “Call of Duty: Black Ops 4” on the name alone. Towards the end of the property’s lifecycle, it was clear that the multiplayer aspect is what gamers have come to play more, to begin with. As such, it really is not that surprising that a multiplayer-only game of the series would still sell well.
Those who preferred the single-player campaigns of the franchise for the story might make a fuss over the fact that “Call of Duty: Black Ops 4” does not have one. However, it’s clear that they are not changing anyone’s minds. In fact, a lot of these complainants might even be buying the game despite their own sentiments.
Of course, “Call of Duty: Black Ops 4” has also received good reviews, especially with regards to its Battle Royale mode. At this point, many are even saying that “Blackout” might just be better than “Fortnite.”
