Many video game fans might agree that “Cyberpunk 2077” has already had its redemption, especially after its latest major update that coincided with the release of the Netflix anime adaptation “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners.” Now, publisher CD Projekt confirmed it is considering more TV series projects inspired by its IPs.
CD Projekt recognized the success of “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners” on Netflix during its Q3 2022 earnings call on Monday. The company did not provide specific figures on how the show’s premiere affected “Cyberpunk 2077” sales. But Michal Nowakowski, SVP of Business Development, confirmed that they have observed an increase in game sales compared to before the show was released on the streaming platform.
“Cyberpunk: Edgerunners” was produced by Studio Trigger with a standalone storyline set in Night City. The series served as a prequel to the events narrated in the video game.
The publisher also took note of the success “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners” saw on Netflix. The series maintained a spot in the streaming service’s Top 10 chart in 19 countries. In some of those territories, the show was one of the most-watched titles for up to four consecutive weeks. And CD Projekt said this solidifies their plan to explore more projects in other media spaces other than gaming.
Nowakowski clarified that the company is not confirming any specific projects yet, including "Cyberpunk: Edgerunners" season 2. But the positive response toward the series appears to have convinced the company to follow up on its plans to release similar projects.
“We did say a number of times that we have an appetite … to do more in the transmedia, so in the linear visual animation or live action, and those plans have not changed,” Nowakowski said (via Seeking Alpha). “So, when we are ready, you may expect to see more announcements in that regard coming from us.”
The “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners” arguably ended without significant loose ends, so fans were not left hanging in terms of its plot. And CD Projekt Red Japan’s Satoru Honma said last month that the company does not have plans to commission a second season of the series.
However, “Cyberpunk 2077” fans have other things to look forward to, including the DLC expansion “Phantom Liberty” slated to be released in 2023. CD Projekt has also confirmed it will work on a sequel for the cyberpunk RPG, but details on its story, gameplay, and launch timeline are not yet available.
