Brazil’s Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes has summoned former President Jair Bolsonaro’s legal team to explain his alleged defiance of court orders restricting his use of social media, according to Brazilian news outlet G1. Moraes has given Bolsonaro’s lawyers 24 hours to respond and warned that failure to provide a satisfactory explanation could lead to the former president’s immediate arrest.
The warning follows concerns that Bolsonaro has continued to communicate through social media despite a judicial ban. Moraes indicated that even press interviews featuring Bolsonaro could violate the court’s orders if they are shared on digital platforms. The justice emphasized that such actions may constitute a breach of restrictions related to Bolsonaro’s ongoing legal investigations.
The restriction stems from broader investigations into Bolsonaro’s alleged involvement in inciting anti-democratic acts and attempts to undermine Brazil’s electoral process. Bolsonaro, a far-right leader who governed from 2019 to 2022, has consistently denied wrongdoing but remains under scrutiny for allegedly spreading misinformation and refusing to accept electoral defeat.
Moraes has played a key role in overseeing several high-profile cases involving Bolsonaro and his allies, particularly those tied to digital disinformation and coup-related accusations. The potential for arrest adds to the former president’s growing legal troubles and could escalate political tensions in Brazil.
The development underscores the judiciary’s efforts to enforce accountability for violations tied to misinformation and anti-democratic behavior, especially on social media platforms. As the legal battle unfolds, Bolsonaro’s ability to engage publicly and politically remains increasingly constrained under the court’s watch.
