AMARILLO, Texas, June 29, 2017 -- Amarillo residents concerned about their vision now have a better option for complete and comprehensive vision screening. Balfour Optical in Amarillo is offering patients optomap retinal scans, which utilize special state-of-the-art laser technology to help diagnose vision problems. Optometry patients are currently being offered a free optomap retinal scan through the end of the year. Designed to detect signs of disease, the retinal imaging device is easier and more efficient than traditional methods.
Generally performed in conjunction with a traditional comprehensive eye exam, the optomap allows the optometrist to see up to 80% of the retina, providing a comprehensive view of the patient’s overall eye health. For comparison, traditional eye exams only reveal 15% of the retina. The process is painless and involves a quick flash and detailed image being taken of the patient’s retina. Results are nearly instant and can be reviewed at the same appointment.
“We are very happy to offer our patients this unique and comprehensive exam,” says optometrist Dr. James Fitch. “Early detection is crucial when it comes to things like glaucoma and macular degeneration. However, we can also tell if a patient is experiencing side effects of high blood pressure or diabetes just by reviewing the optomap scan.”
Usually, the optomap scan is paired with a comprehensive eye exam for an additional $39 fee. However, the team at Balfour Optical is offering it free through the end of the year in order to help more patients take part in the process. In addition to this advanced screening, the optometry center also offers complete vision care services for children, adults, and seniors.
“So many people think that going to the eye doctor is just picking up a new pair of prescription glasses or contacts, but there is so much more to it. That’s why I believe this test is so important,” continues Dr. Fitch. “It really is helping people change their overall health through that early discovery of issues before they turn into bigger problems later on in life."
