Tysons, VA, May 03, 2017 -- B23 joins in celebrating Apache Metron’s graduation from the Apache Incubator to a Top-Level Project (TLP) with The Apache Software Foundation (ASF). From its 2014 inception as an open source initiative sponsored by Cisco Systems through its ASF incubator status and now as a top-level project, B23 has delivered the longest-running premier implementation of Apache Metron’s advanced analytics code. Currently, B23 has three (3) PMC Members and Committers as part of the Apache Metron project.
“Apache Metron uses many of the same open source tools that we have been using within the B23 Data Platform for years such as Apache Kafka, Elastic, Apache Nifi, and Hadoop. It made sense for B23 to embrace this project and these modern big data tools,” explains Mark Bittmann, a Partner at B23 and their Chief Data Scientist. Bittmann has the distinction of promoting the name “Metron”, which was ultimately selected by the community as the name of this project. He is also an active member of the Apache Spark TLP.
“In the early days of Metron, there were occasions where we had to develop specific tooling around data acquisition to collect large volumes of data generated by modern enterprises,” said Dave Hirko, B23’s Co-Founder and Managing Partner. “At one point, we were attempting to capture a petabyte of data every 75 minutes which was a significant challenge.” Hirko was an early advocate for Apache Metron’s enterprise-level adoption and its potential high return on investment. He has published a series of articles related to the vision and roadmap of OpenSOC and Metron.
“B23 is proud to be the longest, continuously operating organization to support Apache Metron," said Brad Kolarov, B23’s Co-Founder and Managing Partner. “OpenSOC and the early Metron project was self-admittedly challenging for customers to install and configure. Our contributions around automating deployment and implementing distributed systems on Amazon Web Services resonated with B23’s expertise. In one case, we automated Apache Metron’s deployment on AWS for a well-known international bank allowing them to operationalize an initial capability that same day.”
Before its acceptance into the Apache Incubator, B23 was instrumental in proving out Metron’s data analytical capabilities for a large North American financial services customer that has not been made public.
