Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese reiterated the country’s unwavering support for a two-state solution in the Middle East following former U.S. President Donald Trump’s unexpected announcement of plans to take over the Gaza Strip.
Speaking at a news conference, Albanese emphasized that Australia’s stance remains unchanged. “Australia's position is the same as it was this morning, as it was last year. The Australian government supports, on a bipartisan basis, a two-state solution,” he stated.
Trump, during a joint conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, declared the U.S. would assume control of Gaza and relocate Palestinians to neighboring countries. “The U.S. will take over the Gaza Strip, and we will do a job with it too,” Trump asserted.
His remarks have sparked global reactions, raising concerns about the geopolitical implications of such a move. The two-state solution, long backed by international leaders, aims to establish an independent Palestinian state alongside Israel. Critics argue that any unilateral intervention in Gaza could further destabilize the region and complicate peace efforts.
Albanese’s reaffirmation aligns with Australia’s longstanding diplomatic position, which supports peaceful coexistence between Israelis and Palestinians. His statement highlights the broader international consensus that a negotiated settlement is crucial for regional stability.
The U.S. announcement is expected to fuel further debate on the future of Gaza and the feasibility of a two-state solution. Global leaders will likely weigh in on the potential ramifications of Trump’s proposal as tensions persist in the region.
