The newest MacBook Pro is out and the consensus among the traditional “pro” consumers is to brand it as a disappointment. That is to say, many are saying that the specs and features of Apple’s high-grade laptop are no longer geared towards professionals. Rather, it’s the company’s attempt to court casual users, which resulted in alienating its core base.
As The Verge reports, the MacBook Pro simply does not meet the specifications that professionals have come to expect from Apple’s more powerful line of laptops. Back in the day, the “Pro” designation used to mean that it packs a lot of muscle under the hood, which made it perfect for really demanding tasks.
The Pro was used by photographers, programmers, app creators, and journalists who needed the extra juice to make sure that their tasks are done efficiently. This has led to the rise of a certain level of expectation with every iteration of the MacBook Pro. Basically, every single new version had to be more powerful, more efficient and should offer more features than the last one. This time, Apple failed to meet those expectations.
Aside from abysmal RAM capabilities, the unit has also been slammed for putting the screws on its users with regards to making the laptop more expensive and super incompatible with so many other apps. As a result, Apple’s incredibly costly device has become more of a luxury item in name and reputation, rather than being the workhorse that its fans used to know it as.
Recode notes that the main reason for this change in trend for the MacBook Pro is the fact that it has long since gone mainstream. With more and more people wanting to latch on to the “Pro” moniker, this led to the need for diversification in terms of its features. The publication also noted how the most vocal users of the laptop’s decrease in performance are only a fraction of Apple’s consumers. This supposedly makes their complaints practically negligible.
