Dublin, Feb. 07, 2017 -- Research and Markets has announced the addition of the "Aortic Aneurysm Repair Devices Global Market - Forecast to 2023" report to their offering.
An aneurysm develops due to the weakening of blood vessel which results in a balloon-like dilation. Aneurysms can occur in any artery, it happens most often in the abdominal aorta, an essential blood vessel that supplies blood to legs. Most aortic aneurysms occur in the section of the aorta that passes through the abdomen and are referred as abdominal aortic aneurysms, sometimes in the chest referred as thoracic aortic aneurysms.
Normally the diameter of the aorta in the abdomen is about 2 cm but in the case of an abdominal aortic aneurysm, the diameter increases to 3 cm or even more. Once an aortic aneurysm develops gradually it tends to become larger and the speed at which it becomes larger varies from person to person. Generally, aneurysm tends to become larger by about 10% per year. This condition rarely happens in the age group below 60 years. The wall of the aorta normally has layers of elastin, collagen and smooth muscle tissue.
As people grow older aorta loses its normal strength and elasticity due to changes in the elastin, collagen and smooth muscle tissues. Genetic makeup also plays a major part in the development of aortic aneurysms. The condition can be treated by either open surgery or by EVAR procedure. EVAR is a minimally-invasive newer technique which employs stent grafts and other components like catheter, guide wires and other devices to repair an aortic aneurysm and has become a popular option in recent years.
