While Tesla might be the reigning king of both sports and sedan electric vehicles, its cars are not exactly suited to off-road driving. This is where the Nikola Powersports Nikola Zero UTV (Utility Task Vehicle) could make its mark. It is equipped with a 125kWh battery pack and comes with 555 horsepower. What’s more, it only costs $35,000.
Sharing the same namesake as Tesla, Nikola Powersports is an up and coming EV company that is trying to differentiate itself by offering niche products. It offers three main vehicles, which are the Nikola One and Nikola Two Semi trucks, and now, the Nikola Zero. According to the company’s webpage of the off-road EV, the Zero possesses some incredible specs, including 4,900 ft-lbs of torque.
That kind of power exceeds even some tanks and it doesn’t stop there. The highest battery option is a 125kWh pack, which is more than the Tesla Model S P100D’s 100kWh battery. It can also accelerate from 0 to 60mph in 3.9 seconds. That’s nowhere near what some sports EVs can do, but it’s faster than the Tesla Model 3’s 5.1-second acceleration.
The highest battery option also gives the Nikola Zero 200 miles of range for a single charge, which is amazing for an off-road EV. As Futurism notes, this vehicle’s power is also more than anyone will likely ever need. Even more impressive is how the vehicle will apparently regulate the amount of energy expended based on what the activity requires.
Basically, it will only use the exact amount of power necessary to move or tow an object, which is a huge energy saver. This prevents drivers from expending unnecessary amounts of power, thus extending the range of the vehicle.
The Nikola Zero is now available for reservation via the company’s website. Reservation requires a $750 deposit but the launch of the vehicle itself won’t be until January 2018.
