Apple is very close to unveiling the highly anticipated iPhone 14 series, but more details about its technical specifications are appearing in the wild. Renowned analyst Ming-Chi Kuo released his latest prediction, stating that the iPhone 14 Pro models could sport more camera upgrades than previously reported.
Kuo said in a series of tweets on Monday that he predicts the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max to sport upgraded ultra-wide cameras with 1.4µm sensors. In comparison, the iPhone 13 Pro models featured 1.0µm sensors.
Apple is expected to improve other aspects of the iPhone 14 Pro’s cameras as well, which leads to increased costs of the components. “CIS (CMOS image sensor), VCM (voice coil motor), and CCM (compact camera module) have a significant unit price increase in this upgrade, with about 70%, 45%, and 40%,” Kuo wrote.

I predict two iPhone 14 Pro models' ultra-wide cameras will upgrade to 1.4µm (vs. iPhone 13 Pro's 1.0µm). CIS (CMOS image sensor), VCM (voice coil motor), and CCM (compact camera module) have a significant unit price increase in this upgrade, with about 70%, 45%, and 40%.
Other components of the ultra-wide cameras will also cost Apple more, but Kuo said the changes will be limited. The analyst added that the CIS will be supplied by Sony, while Minebea and Largan will both provide Apple with the iPhone 14 Pro ultra-wide camera’s VCM. LG Innotek was also named as the CCM supplier for the camera’s CCM. These companies are expected to be “the significant beneficiaries” of the more costly components of the camera.
While Kuo did not specify other outcomes of this upgrade, reports expect the larger sensor for ultra-wide cameras for the iPhone 14 Pro models to also lead to larger pixels. This would then allow the camera to produce brighter images with less noise.
Apple fans should note that this is apart from the previously reported upgrade to the iPhone 14 Pro models’ main camera. Kuo said earlier that the high-end phones could also ship with better wide-angle cameras than their predecessors. The devices are expected to feature a 48MP wide-angle sensor.
Kuo’s predictions are based on research from the supply chain, and the analyst has been known for his oft-accurate forecast on upcoming Apple products. But tech fans should soon find out if these camera upgrades will become a reality as Apple gears up for its iPhone 14 event on Sept. 7.
