Mariano L.M. Heyden

Associate Professor of Strategy & International Business, Monash University

Dr. Mariano (Pitòsh) Heyden (b. Curaçao, 1984) is Associate Professor of Strategy & International Business in the Department of Management at the Monash Business School (Melbourne, Australia). He obtained his PhD from the Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University (Rotterdam, The Netherlands) in 2012.

Prior to joining Monash Business School in 2017 he held Lecturer and Senior Lecturer positions at The University of Newcastle (Newcastle, Australia), where he was a rewarded a Vice Chancellor’s Award for Research & Innovation in 2015. Mariano holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (with honors) from the University of the Netherlands Antilles (2006; now University of Curaçao) and an MPhil in Business Research/MSc. In Business Administration (cum laude) from the Erasmus Research Institute of Management (Erasmus University Rotterdam, 2008).

Dr. Heyden’s research interests are at the intersection of strategic leadership (focusing on decision-makers across the hierarchy), corporate governance (focusing on external governance, boards of directors, and corporate social responsibility), and organizational adaptation (focusing on renewal/change, innovation, and corporate entrepreneurship). His peer-reviewed work appears in international outlets such as Journal of Management (A*), Organization Studies (A*), Journal of Management Studies (A*), Human Resource Management (A*), Long Range Planning (A), Journal of Business Ethics (A), Global Strategy Journal (A), International Journal of Human Resource Management (A), as well as several book chapters in edited volumes published by Palgrave Macmillan and Springer. His research-informed perspectives on topical issues of general interest can be found in media outlets such as The Conversation.

Dr. Heyden has been an international visiting scholar and taught undergraduate and graduate courses and seminars across Asia, Australia, the Caribbean, Europe, and the US, as well as global cohorts online. His teaching covers topics such as Strategic Management, Global Business Management, Globalization, Managing under Uncertainty, Advanced Research Methods, Strategic Business Planning, and Advanced Strategy Topics. He has received several teaching commendations from the Director of Postgraduate Education of the Newcastle Business School.

He is a member of flagship international learned societies in his area, including Academy of Management, Academy of International Business, and Strategic Management Society. He has served on the scientific committee of the European Academy of Management and regularly presents and chairs sessions at various international conferences. He is a regular ad hoc reviewer for numerous international peer-refereed journals and has reviewed for the National Science Foundation of the USA. He currently serves as associate editor of Strategy & Organization Theory at European Management Journal (Elsevier).

Pitòsh was recently awarded the prestigious Discovery Early Career Research Award (DECRA) by the Australian Research Council ($AU 379,000) for a three year project commencing in 2017.
