Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said he held a “very good” phone conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump on the U.S. Independence Day holiday, emphasizing that continued American support could play a decisive role in ending the Russia-Ukraine war, which has now lasted more than four years.
According to Zelenskiy, the discussion focused on the current battlefield situation and the broader efforts to achieve a lasting peace. He stressed that the United States remains a critical partner for Ukraine and said strong American leadership and determination could significantly influence the course of the conflict.
“There is a real prospect to end this war, and American resolve will have a crucial meaning,” Zelenskiy said, expressing optimism about future diplomatic efforts.
The Ukrainian leader also revealed that he and Trump agreed to continue their discussions during next week’s NATO summit in Turkey. The meeting is expected to provide another opportunity for both leaders to address military cooperation, security challenges, and potential pathways toward ending the conflict with Russia.
Zelenskiy thanked the United States for its continued assistance since the war began, highlighting not only government support but also the solidarity shown by the American people. He praised what he described as the compassion and commitment of “American hearts” that continue to care about Ukraine’s future and the global defense of freedom.
As part of Ukraine’s tribute to the United States on the Fourth of July, Kyiv illuminated the iconic Motherland Monument in red, white, and blue. The towering 62-meter (203-foot) statue overlooking the Dnipro River was lit in the colors of the American flag, symbolizing the close partnership between the two countries during the ongoing conflict.
The call between Zelenskiy and Trump comes as Ukraine seeks to strengthen international backing while pursuing diplomatic and military strategies aimed at bringing the war with Russia to an end.
