Maeve (Thandie Newton) became one of the most important characters in the popular HBO sci-fi series, and she could be returning in “Westworld” season 3. However, the second season showed her dying, implying that it was the end for her. But there is one indication that Newton’s character could be revived.
Last October, reports have it that several main cast members of the show negotiated for pay raise prior to the beginning of “Westworld” season 3 production. The talks purportedly worked in the actors’ favor, and Newton was believed to be included in these discussions.
That ultimately indicates she is returning in “Westworld” season 3. However, since this is a sci-fi series and practically anything can happen, there is one little chance that she could be revived as a different character. But there is also a chance that Maeve’s story continues in the third installment.
Newton has been vocal about tackling the pay gap between actresses and their male counterparts. Prior to the worldwide premiere of season 2 in April 2018, it was confirmed that HBO finally agreed in doing so for Evan Rachel Wood as she returns for “Westworld” season 3. Newton, on the other hand, confirmed she was part of the negotiations at the time.
“They’re all happening right now, and yeah, we’re all equal across the board,” Newton told Vanity Fair about the equal pay talks for “Westworld” season 3. “It’s really exciting. It’s unprecedented. It’s—goodness; it shatters so much calcified pain, resentment, frustration. It just shatters it.”
Interestingly, when Maeve’s “death” in season 2 was revealed, Newton seemingly expressed disappointment over her character’s fate implying that it might have been the end for her. “It was absolutely thrilling to play her and then Season 2 was devastating,” Newton said in an interview with Newsweek. “I was angry with the showrunners. I was! I was like, ‘No, she can’t go through this.’”
Newton’s portrayal of Maeve earned her various prestigious acting recognitions including the Primetime Emmy Award for a supporting role in 2018. Meanwhile, fans will have to wait a while before learning what really happens to Maeve as “Westworld” season 3 will not premiere until 2020.
