Making a “Venom” movie was always a complicated affair, mostly because of the character’s position in the Marvel universe. He was primarily depicted as a “Spider-Man” villain, but in the first film, he was cast as an anti-hero. This could change in “Venom 2” where he might actually become something of a bad guy, especially with the possibility of a crossover with “Spider-Man” being brought up.
For some context, the first movie initially had nothing to do with the MCU. In fact, there was no mention of any of the events in any of the previous films. This itself is already casting doubt as to whether a crossover is even possible. However, “Spider-Man: Far From Home” could find a way around that, thus leading to a connection in “Venom 2” or the films after it, Forbes notes.
A lot of this hinges on the plot device that was recently introduced in the latest trailer for “Spider-Man: Far From Home,” in which the subject of alternate universes was brought up. Now, it is speculated that Marvel and Sony could simply use this opportunity to bring two iconic characters together in “Venom 2.”
This could work by either bringing Venom (Tom Hardy) over to the MCU or bringing Spider-Man (Tom Holland) into the Sony universe. Either way, this would allow the Tom-Tom pair to be in the same place and fight or work with each other. Such a collaboration would be a goldmine of entertainment for the fans, especially if the director’s seat for films following “Venom 2” is given over to someone competent.
That would practically make it a Marvel choice, by default, since it has a decent track record of finding awesome filmmakers for its movies. The movies following “Venom 2” would certainly benefit from being placed in the hands of someone who actually knows how to handle superhero movies. As for when the film would come out, October 2020 is the current schedule.
