Ukraine has successfully brought home 205 service personnel from Russian captivity in the first phase of a large-scale prisoner exchange with Russia, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy confirmed on Friday. The operation marks a significant step in ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing tensions between the two countries amid the prolonged conflict.
According to Zelenskiy, the released Ukrainian soldiers are part of a broader agreement between Kyiv and Moscow to exchange 1,000 prisoners of war each. The prisoner swap is taking place during a three-day ceasefire reportedly brokered by U.S. President Donald Trump, highlighting renewed international involvement in efforts to stabilize the situation between Russia and Ukraine.
The return of the Ukrainian POWs has been welcomed across the country, with many families finally reunited after months or even years of uncertainty. Ukrainian officials emphasized that securing the release of all captured military personnel remains a top national priority. The government continues to work closely with international mediators and humanitarian organizations to negotiate further exchanges.
Russia has also confirmed participation in the agreement, although details regarding the number of Russian soldiers released during this initial stage have not yet been fully disclosed. Analysts say the large-scale prisoner swap could signal a temporary easing of hostilities and potentially open the door for additional diplomatic discussions in the future.
The Russia-Ukraine war has led to thousands of military and civilian casualties since the conflict escalated, making prisoner exchanges a highly sensitive humanitarian issue. The latest development is being closely monitored by global leaders and international observers, who view the ceasefire and POW exchange as an important moment in ongoing peace efforts.
As the exchange process continues, both sides are expected to release more prisoners over the coming days under the terms of the agreement.
