Britain’s Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has launched an investigation into TikTok, Reddit, and Imgur over concerns about how they handle children’s privacy. The probe will assess how TikTok, owned by ByteDance, uses the personal data of 13–17-year-olds to recommend content. Additionally, Reddit and Imgur are under scrutiny for their methods of verifying users' ages.
Social media platforms rely on complex algorithms to personalize content, but these can also expose children to potentially harmful material. The ICO aims to determine if these platforms comply with UK privacy laws designed to protect minors. If violations are found, the companies will be required to respond before any final decisions are made.
The UK has previously enacted strict regulations to prevent children from accessing harmful content, mandating platforms to implement age-verification measures. Social media giants, including Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok, are also under pressure to refine their algorithms to minimize exposure to inappropriate material.
TikTok, Reddit, and Imgur have yet to respond to requests for comment. The ICO’s findings could have significant implications for how social media platforms handle child safety and privacy in the UK.
