Many people suffer from diabetes, and among those who suffer from this disease are identified under type 2 diabetes. Fortunately, there is a way to put this into remission, and it all starts with a diet.

Diabetes is, simply put, what results from having high blood sugar and low insulin levels. If left untreated, it may lead to serious and even fatal complications such as a heart attack or a stroke. By going on a healthy diet and enough exercise, blood sugar levels can be controlled along with insulin levels and diabetes can be placed into remission. Express reports that along with cutting back on sugar, yogurt can be included in a diet for those suffering from type 2 diabetes.

As to why yogurt is something that can be incorporated into a type 2 diabetes-friendly diet, nutritionists say that yogurt is a very good source of calcium, vitamin d, potassium, and protein. Yogurt also helps aid in the protection of bones as well as teeth. Because yogurt has probiotics or the good kind of bacteria, it also helps reduce inflammation as those with type 2 diabetes tend to have high inflammation levels in the body.

However, not every yogurt in the market is made the same way. There are still kinds of yogurt to avoid. Sometimes the yogurt being sold in the market is not as healthy as it may seem to be. Some yogurts have more of the good bacteria than others, it will all depend on the brand.

The kind of yogurt that is advisable for those suffering from type 2 diabetes is probiotic yogurt. This because probiotic yogurt has active, live cultures.

A study was conducted by the US National Library of Medicine Institutes of Health on the consumption of probiotic yogurt and the effect it has on a person’s blood sugar. The participants of the study had their blood sugar levels taken before and after. They found that those who consumed probiotic yogurt every day had lower blood sugar levels.

When it all comes down to it, people with type 2 diabetes should opt for unflavored and fat-free or at least probiotic yogurt that is also low-fat.
