U.S. President Donald Trump announced Wednesday that he is collaborating with House Republicans on a continuing resolution to fund the government through September. The move aims to prevent a partial shutdown as the current funding deadline approaches on March 14.
House Speaker Mike Johnson confirmed his intention to pass a "clean" stopgap funding measure, maintaining current spending levels while deferring proposed cuts to the next fiscal year. Johnson stated that the legislative text for the resolution would be released by the end of the week.
Trump emphasized the bill's appeal to conservatives, highlighting its potential to pave the way for tax cuts and spending reductions through reconciliation. "Conservatives will love this bill because it sets us up to cut taxes and spending while effectively freezing spending this year," Trump wrote on social media.
While Johnson ruled out incorporating proposed cuts from Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency—strongly opposed by Democrats—the measure remains a strategic move to secure funding while setting the stage for future fiscal policies.
