“The Walking Dead” Spoilers: [Spoiler] Dead, Turned Into A Walker; Showrunner Says Season 8 Will Put “Beginning Of Civilization” At Stake

In the latest episode of “The Walking Dead” Season 7, a surprise coming from the series’ unlikeliest of heroes has thrown off Negan’s (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) initial chances of winning the war between his group and Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and his crew.

TIME said Sasha (Sonequa Martin-Green) saw her exit from the series as she took the poison pill given to her by Eugene (Josh McDermitt) before she was placed in a coffin and used in a dramatic stand-off by Negan with Rick. As Rick and his crew were trapped by Negan and his Saviors, the double-crossing group the Scavengers, led by Jadis (Pollyanna McIntosh), a zombified Sasha became Rick’s element of surprise before Ezekiel-led (Khary Payton) Kingdom and the Maggie-led (Lauren Cohan) Hilltop came in to save the day.

After the skirmish, a voiceover revealed that Maggie had already known Sasha’s sacrifice before her untimely death. It was revealed that she was talking to Sasha, and took in a sunset before parting ways for the last time, ABC News reported.

Series showrunner Scott Gimple told Variety that Sasha’s sacrifice was significant, especially for the events in Season 8. He explained, “As things were coming into place we saw that Sasha would do anything to make sure Maggie is safe and Sasha wanted to make sure she took care of this to make sure Maggie wouldn’t have to do it. Sasha’s sacrifice is the momentum with which the characters go into Season 8. It’s tragic but much less traumatic than the first episode because this was a character going out on her own terms.”

Moreover, he said Sasha’s death and the culmination of the war between Rick’s group and Negan’s group is basically a fight to keep beginning of civilization to continue progressing. He added, There’s a very basic political idea at play here. They want to live in a fair world instead of having it just be Negan’s. To that end, that idea feels to me like the beginning of civilization is at stake, this new civilization they want to build rather than live this strange half-life serving a despot.”
