‘THE BFG’ was a surprising flop at the box office during its opening weekend. It was trumped by another competing Disney film ‘Finding Dory’, which remains at the top spot since its release last June 17, 2016.
According to Box Office Mojo, Steven Spielberg’s newly released fantasy-adventure film earned an estimated $18.55 million during its opening weekend from July 1 to July 3. To date, it currently stands at $22.2 million.
In comparison, ‘Finding Dory’ grossed an estimated $135.1 million during its opening weekend from June 17 to June 19. As of July 4, the animated film’s gross to date is at $380.55 million. According to TV Guide, the film continues to maintain the top spot for the third week in a row.
‘The BFG’ is not the only film ‘Finding Dory’ managed to outplay. It also bested ‘The Legend of Tarzan’, which grossed an estimated $38.5 million on its three-day opening weekend and ‘The Purge: Election Year’, which opened at $31.39 million.
Spielberg’s surprising flop had a production budget of $140 million, according to Express.co.uk. It was reportedly expected to receive $21 million over the Fourth of July weekend.
Despite low numbers, it received generally positive reviews from critics. It has high ratings on review aggregator websites Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic as well as on Las Vegas market research firm CinemaScore.
‘The BFG’ is an American fantasy-adventure film directed by acclaimed director Steven Spielberg. It is based on the 1982 novel of the same name authored by Roald Dahl. It follows an orphan girl who befriends an outcast “big friendly giant” and joins him in the fight against man-eating giants threatening to devour the world.
The film was released in the United States last July 1, 2016. It stars Mark Rylance as the BFG, Ruby Barnhill as Sophie, Rebecca Hall as Mary, Penelope Wilton as The Queen, Jemaine Clement as The Fleshlumpeater, Bill Hader as the Bloodbottler, and Rafe Spall as Mr. Tibbs among others.
It was produced by Walt Disney Pictures, Amblin Entertainment, Reliance Entertainment, Walden Media, and the Kennedy/Marshall Company. It was distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures.
