Even before “Star Trek: Picard” Season 1 release date arrived, the show generated so much buzz that CBS All Access already saw its potential to become a hit series. Given the franchise’s multi-generational fan base, the network’s bosses did not hesitate at all to already announce the renewal for “Star Trek: Picard” Season 2 even before the show’s pilot first season episode started airing.

The announcement was made by CBS All Access Executive Vice President of Original Content Julie McNamara, according to Collider. “The energy and excitement around the premiere of STAR TREK: PICARD has reached a magnitude greater than all of us at CBS All Access could have hoped for,” McNamara said.

Considering the excitement surrounding the show even before it aired, the network deemed it prudent to give the go signal for its renewal ahead of time. “We’re thrilled to announce plans for a second season before the series’ debut, and we are confident that ‘Star Trek’ fans and new viewers alike will be captured by the stellar cast and creative team’s meticulously crafted story when it premieres on Jan. 23,” McNamara added.

Sir Patrick Stewart likewise announced the renewal on social media. “We are about 10 days away from the premiere of #StarTrekPicard, so it’s a delight to share with you that we’ve been renewed for a second season!” the actor posted on Twitter. “Excited to get back to work and for you to see what our amazing team has created for season one.”

Long-time fans of the franchise would feel right at home with “Star Trek: Picard.” The show would star Sir Patrick Stewart who will be reprising his role as Jean-Luc Picard, the most-seen captain of the starship USS Enterprise in the entire franchise. He has played the role in “Star Trek: The Next Generation” series from 1987 to 1994. The actor also played the role in the films “Star Trek Generations” (1994), “Star Trek: First Contact” (1996), “Star Trek: Insurrection” (1998), and “Star Trek: Nemesis” (2002).

Aside from Sir Patrick Stewart, the other members of the “Star Trek: Picard” cast include actress Alison Pill as Dr. Agnes Jurati, Isa Briones as Dahj, Evan Evagora as Elnor, Michelle Hurd as Raffi Musiker, Santiago Cabrera as Cristobal Rios and Harry Treadaway as Narek. Special guest stars include Brent Spiner as Data, Jonathan Del Arco as Hugh, Jonathan Frakes as William Riker, Jeri Ryan as Seven of Nine and Marina Sirtis as Deanna Troi.

“Star Trek: Picard” Season 1 will premiere on January 23 on CBS All Access, according to CNET.
