This animation made people love the green protagonist called Shrek. People also came to love Fiona and all his friends in the film. The love that they got from the viewers led for the film to have three more sequels after it was first released in 2001.
In the span of nine years, Dreamworks Studio was able to release four “Shrek” movies, and now fans are waiting for “Shrek 5,” the fifth film in the franchise. The last film was dropped in 2010, and sadly, it has been 10 years already, but the fifth sequel is still nowhere in sight.
Development of the fifth film
Five years after “Shrek Forever After” was released on May 21, 2010, “Shrek 5” was confirmed. This project was brought up after NBCUniversal purchased Dreamworks. The new owner of the studio wants to revive the movie, so it has mobilized people to begin its pre-production.
In 2016, it was revealed that the bosses hired a new writer to write a fresh story for “Shrek 5.” The main goal is to give the film a new plot and concept, so, from a sequel, it was clarified that the fifth movie is a reboot, which means it will not base its story on the previous “Shrek” films.
Michael McCullers was assigned to write the story and script, and the bosses clearly stated that they want the next “Shrek” film to be different. McCullers said that he also saw that the movie needs to be reinvented, so he worked on it with this aim in mind.
It is not just the writer who is new in the production of “Shrek 5,” but NBCUniversal’s CEO Steve Burke also put Chris Meledandri to be in charge of the movie. Burke related that he chose Meledanri as he believes he has the ability to make the film looks new.
“Chris Meledandri is creatively going to try to help us figure out how to resurrect ‘Shrek’ and add value as we create new franchises,” he told NME. “The overall goal will be to maximize revenues by creating popular characters which can be licensed out for lucrative spin-off merchandise and theme park attractions.”
Script and filming update
McCullers has long finished writing the script of “Shrek 5,” and he himself revealed this detail via an interview Cinema Blend. “I finished that script and it's really personal to me and it's got a pretty big reinvention behind it that I guess I can't really reveal,” he said.
“Shrek 5” may be released in 2022 if filming will commence next year or in late 2020.
