“Sherlock” season 5 has yet to arrive, and with the very long waiting time, fans have been asking: “Will it still return?” This detective drama is one of Netflix’s most-watched shows, and it is also in the most popular drama lineup on its home channel BBC U.K. so there’s a high chance it will be back.
Why the drama is not renewed yet
Typically, TV series are renewed just one to two months after the last episode was aired. There are also times when the renewal even comes while the show is still on the air but in some cases, the waiting time is longer.
“Sherlock” season 5 falls in the third category since the renewal is still up in the air. Fans last saw the series in 2017, and there is no update from BBC yet with regards to its return.
The last time that the TV network commented on the return of “Sherlock” was a few months after season 4 ended. On the other hand, showrunners Mark Gattis and Steven Moffat have last talked about “Sherlock” season 5 in 2018.
BBC stated that the renewal of the drama is really up to Moffat and Gattis. They explained that they couldn’t immediately work on the drama since the showrunners have been busy with other projects.
At that time, the duo was working in their reunion collaboration project which is “Dracula” which is under BBC as well. As per The Guardian, the two have not dismissed the possibility of doing “Sherlock” season 5 and they are willing to work on it again once they have the time. Besides, the show has millions of viewers so it has sure viewers who will immediately welcome the new season when released.
Plot - What will happen in “Sherlock”
It was predicted that “Sherlock” season 5 will just continue with the story titled “The Final Problem” which is the last episode in season 4. It will center on Sherlock’s family because of his mysterious sister Eurus Holmes.
She scorched the family’s mansion and was brought to a maximum-security psychiatric prison for her behavior. More details about her character would be revealed in “Sherlock” season 5 because it seems that Mycroft and Sherlock will have to investigate their own family.
“Sherlock” season 5, if greenlighted this year, is expected to arrive in 2022.
