Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski of Alaska expressed deep concern this week over the fear of political retaliation from President Donald Trump, revealing it makes her anxious to speak out against his policies. Speaking at a summit in Alaska with nonprofit and tribal leaders, Murkowski acknowledged the growing tension among lawmakers.
"We are all afraid," she said, highlighting the pressure she and others feel. "Retaliation is real. And that’s not right." The senator’s comments were captured in a video shared by the Anchorage Daily News and came in response to a question about public anxiety surrounding Trump-era policy changes.
Murkowski, 67, has been one of the few Senate Republicans to openly criticize Trump, having opposed some of his Cabinet picks and voted to overturn his tariffs on Canada. She also voted to convict Trump during his second impeachment trial following the January 6 Capitol attack. Despite facing a Trump-endorsed challenger three years ago, she retained her Senate seat.
A White House spokesperson downplayed the criticism, stating, “President Trump’s only retribution is success and historic achievements for the American people.”
In her remarks, Murkowski also pushed back against proposed Republican-led cuts to Medicaid, warning against slashing healthcare for low-income Americans to fund tax breaks. She called some of the administration’s recent policy moves “unlawful” and pledged to continue using her voice despite the risks.
“I’ve got to figure out how I can do my best to help the many who are so anxious and are so afraid,” she said to applause from the audience.
Her comments come as other Republicans also face growing public backlash over their alignment with Trump, with some constituent events ending in confrontation and arrests.
