‘Sausage Party’ screenwriters Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg revealed their inspirations for creating the adult animated film about supermarket food stuffs. Co-Director Conrad Vernon also shared his enthusiasm for the project.
During a phone interview with The New York Times, producer-screenwriters Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg revealed how they managed to turn a 3D-animated film into an R-rated flick.
Goldberg admitted, “We’re both crazy about ‘Toy Story,’ and we talked about it all the time as the only comedic trilogy that gets better with each movie.” Rogen said, “We became obsessed with these Pixar movies. Their quality, tone and style were so much fun that we thought we should try to make one of those.”
Their upcoming film follows a sausage named Frank as he tries to unravel the truth about his existence. He is joined by his fellow food stuffs from a supermarket named Shopwell’s as they try to escape their fate of ending up in a human kitchen where they are prepped, sliced, diced and eventually devoured. They decide to engage war against the entire human race.
It is considered a spoof of animated films created by Walt Disney Animation Studios and Pixar Animation Studios. A rough cut of the adult animated film first debuted on March 2016 at the South by Southwest Festival held in Austin, Texas. It was received well by audiences.
Rogen and Goldberg agreed that they still wanted the best professional quality for their film. Rogen said, “We kept saying, in order for this to work, it really has to look as good as people are expecting… or else it’s just a bunch of dirty jokes.” In addition to producing and preparing the screenplay, Rogen is also set to voice Frank the sausage.
Co-director Conrad Vernon shared their enthusiasm saying, “When [Rogen] started pitching it, I thought, oh my God, this is something I’ve wanted to do since I was 13 years old… People who make these movies are adults with adult senses of humor… We have a lot of funny stuff in our heads that we want to do, and probably 75 percent of it can’t go into a children’s movie. So over the long term, if the only place you get to work as an adult is in a child’s world, you’ve got a lot of screwed-up thoughts in your head that you want to get out on paper.”
Vernon is best known for his work on the DreamWorks animated ‘Shrek’ film series. He directed the film together with Greg Tiernan, co-owner of animation company Nitrogen Studios known for producing the British children’s television series “Thomas & Friends.”
According to another article on IndieWire, Vernon admitted, “One of the biggest reasons I wanted to do this was for the industry itself, just to be able to knock down the door and prove that R-rated animation has an audience… It just depends on how you tell the story and we think animation’s not just for families and kids and that it’s a medium and not a genre.”
‘Sausage Party’ is an upcoming adult animated film scheduled to premiere in the United States on August 12, 2016. Its cast includes Seth Rogen, Kristin Wiig, Michael Cera, James Franco, Bill Hader, Jonah Hill, and Salma Hayek among others.
