In direct response to the subpar business performance of 2023 and the volatile economic environment, Samsung Group has increased its operational pace by mandating a six-day work week for its executives.
According to The Korea Economic Daily, Samsung Group officials have stated that following five days of work a week, executives at Samsung Electronics Co., including those in the manufacturing and sales divisions, will work on Saturday or Sunday. On the extra day, executives will examine and adjust corporate plans to tackle difficulties.
Samsung's Emergency Mode Activates Six-Day Work Schedule
Starting this week, executives across all Samsung Group companies will work six days a week to transition to emergency mode. The decision was made in response to the fact that some of the group's core businesses posted lower-than-expected results in 2023 and that the won's steep devaluation, growing oil prices, and expensive borrowing are exacerbating business uncertainty.
Long-Term Impacts of Extended Work Weeks
The introduction of the 6-day work week is intended to instill a feeling of urgency in executives since the performance of central units under the Samsung group failed to meet expectations in 2023. This will allow for the fullest effort to solve these issues.
This direction applies to top management at Samsung Display, Samsung Electro-Mechanics, Samsung SDS, and other affiliates. It does not apply to employees below the executive level; they will still work the standard 5-day workweek.
As per SamMobile, this seems to be an effort on the part of the conglomerate to revive the sense of urgency that the rank and file formerly possessed to help the corporation accomplish great things. According to recent research, Samsung lags behind competitors because of its risk aversion. Maybe a move to reverse that is currently being made to avoid the dangers of complacency.
Samsung's transition to emergency mode follows SK Group's decision in January to reinstate Saturday gatherings of its subsidiaries' chief executives, which it had discontinued after implementing a five-day work week in July 2000. This meeting has replaced the previous weekday Strategy Committee Meeting for CEOs within SK Group's various business units.
